UFC 315 is set to go down on May 10, at the Bell Centre, Montreal.
The main card will kick off with a lightweight scrap between Benoît Saint Denis and Joel Alvarez. Alverez (7-2 in the UFC) seeks to extend his three-fight win streak against Benoît Saint Denis (5-3 in the UFC) who is coming off a doctor stoppage loss to Money Moicano. This bout has top 15 ranking implications. A win for Saint Denis would see him breach the top 15, while a loss from Alvarez would see him fall from the ranking.
The next contenders to step into the octagon are Alexa Grasso (8-4-1 in the UFC) and Natalia Silva (6-0 in the UFC). Silva, who is on an impressive 12 fight win streak will contend with Alexa Grasso who’s only loss in the last 6 years was to the current flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.
It’s to be assumed the fighter who exits the cage triumphant will go on to fight for the women’s flyweight title, as both women hold a place in the top 5 ranking. With Alexa Grasso the number 1 contender and Natalia Silva the number 5 contender respectively.
Following this title eliminator bout in the co main event is the women’s flyweight world championship title fight. Valentina Shevchenko put’s her belt on the line against the number two ranked Manon “The Beast” Fiorot. The beast has been on tear since her pro debut loss back in June 2018 and has amassed a 12-fight win streak, half those wins coming by way of KO/TKO.
However, a daunting task awaits the “The Beast” in Valentina “The Bullet” Shevchenko. The 37-year-old, who turned pro at age 15, is a veteran of 29 MMA fights and 60 kickboxing/Muy Thai fights. Shevchenko cemented herself as the women’s pound for pound best fighter by famously defending the flyweight title 7 times before losing to Alexa Grasso via rear naked choke.
She would go on to face Grasso two more times, winning back the title via Unanimous decision in the 3rd confrontation of the trilogy. A win over Manon Fiorot will solidify her place as number 1 in the ranking.
In the main event of the evening Belal Muhammad defends the welterweight title for the first time against Jack Della Maddalena. Both fighters enter the octagon on impressive win streaks. Belal holding 10 wins in a row, with Maddalena riding high on 17 victories, 14 of which are finishes.
Many in the MMA community are looking to Jack Della Maddalena to shake up the welterweight division and put “the excitement” back into the title picture, as accusations of being a boring fighter have been leveled against Belal Muhammad for his wrestling heavy approach and lack of “barn burning” performances in the octagon.
While the current champion does hold a 79% Decision rate, 2019 was the last time any fighter was able to stop Muhammad from imposing his will via his offensive, heavy pressure grappling. Jack Della Maddalena looks to negative Muhammad with his defensive grappling and striking skills, making this match up a throw back to the early days of MMA with the classic striker vs grappler dynamic.
